Nutrition and education of shepherd children in Kenya
with Africa Digna Foundation

For the fifth consecutive year, we have supported the programme “Lchekuti, Child Shepherds” in northern Kenya, in collaboration with the África Digna Foundation. This project promotes a dignified life for children aged 6 to 16 through impactful educational and nutritional interventions in the Samburu communities of Barsaloi, Lodokume, Lowa, Lulu, Mabati, Nairimirimo, Opiroi and Raraiti. For these communities, livestock herding is the main economic activity. As these child shepherds spend their entire day working, they have no opportunity to attend school and rely solely on milk and tea for nourishment. As a result, they are children who cannot read or write, face a high risk of social exclusion, and suffer from significant malnutrition. We have succeeded in ensuring that the child shepherds of Kenya receive two hours of education each weekday, along with a balanced meal at the end of each day’s lessons. Our support spans two school years, until 2022, across four different centres, and will benefit around 280 children.

Fight against maternal and child malnutrion in Mozambique
With IBO Foundation

Limited access to food and widespread food insecurity in Mozambique are key barriers to local development. In April 2019, Cyclone Kenneth struck the coastal region of Cabo Delgado province, directly impacting Ibo Island, Mozambique. Schools, healthcare centres and basic infrastructure suffered severe damage, as did the homes of thousands of residents. Currently, 67,500 children are facing food insecurity and are at risk of life-threatening diseases such as malaria and typhoid. This year, we have continued working with the Ibo Nutritional Support Centre (CANI), with the goal of combating maternal and child malnutrition and addressing its causes and consequences over a 12-month period. We aim to contribute to the socio-economic development of Ibo and to improve the precarious situation faced by its inhabitants. We will support approximately 300 children under the age of five, along with 200 mothers and pregnant women.

Prevention and treatment against malaria in Cameroon
With Recover Foundation

In 2021, we continued our collaboration with the Recover Foundation on the malaria prevention and treatment programme in Cameroon, which aims to diagnose and treat malaria among children in eight school centres. According to the World  Health Organization, half of the  world’s population is at risk of contracting malaria, but in Cameroon the risk is over 80 per cent. The most affected groups are children and pregnant women, as malaria is a leading cause of miscarriage, premature births and high neonatal mortality rates. The project funded diagnostic testing, hospitalisation costs for severe cases, and treatment for malaria in 970 children in the region. It also included the distribution of mosquito nets to families in urgent need.

Expansion of th inclusive school in Monze, Zambia
With Juan Ciudad NGDO

Eighty-six per cent of the population in Zambia lives below the poverty line. It is essential to provide a decent standard of health and social well-being to people living in disadvantaged regions of the world who lack access to basic services such as education. Since 2019, the Nuria García Foundation has been supporting the construction of the first inclusive school in Monze, Zambia, in partnership with Juan Ciudad ONGD. The ultimate goal of this project has been the development of 12 classrooms equipped with an inclusive education programme. We have previously participated in the construction of 3 of these classrooms, as well as a library with capacity for 200 children. In 2021, we completed our final contribution to this project, which was dedicated to building the kitchen and toilet facilities. These areas have been essential to ensure that pupils enjoy decent living and learning conditions. Thanks to the improvements made, 3,200 children will now be able to attend school!

Construction and equipment of Kikaya Uganda
With Babies Uganda Association

In 2018, we supported the construction of Kikaya School in the Wakiso area in collaboration with the Babies Uganda Association. The school opened in 2019 with 164 children, 34 of whom were boarders. By 2020, the new school year began with 300 children, including 120 boarders, which led us to build a new dormitory due to the school’s growing success. This year, the demand for places at Kikaya School has been so high that we have decided to expand the school’s capacity with a new building, which will include four classrooms, doubling its current intake. Education is the most powerful tool to fight poverty and inequality, and it is essential to equip the school with the best possible resources. The increase in pupil numbers must go hand in hand with the expansion of facilities and teaching staff in order to provide quality education to as many vulnerable children as possible.

Improvements in infrastructure, nutrition and health in Kenya
With Kakrigu Primary School

Kakrigu Primary School is located in Mfangano, an island on Lake Victoria in Kenya. In 2016, it received our full support to fund infrastructure improvements and ensure access to education for 350 primary-level children. The pandemic crisis in Kenya has led to food shortages and a lack of sanitary resources. One of the most serious issues has been the lack of personal hygiene products for children, resulting in a rise in various infections. This year, our contribution has been directed towards improving infrastructure, nutrition and health conditions for those affected, including the installation of a new water tank, provision of kitchen utensils, food supplies, and hygiene products for the children.

Improving the Gambasse school in Guinea-Bissau
With SILO Association

Guinea-Bissau is one of the least developed countries in the world. Life expectancy at birth is just 48 years, and child mortality reaches 150 per 1,000 before the age of five. The SILO Association has been working with the population of Guinea-Bissau for 17 years, promoting the development of rural communities and carrying out initiatives to improve education, access to healthcare, and nutrition. In recent years, we have done significant work at the Casa de la Infancia in Gambasse, supporting children with nutritional problems. Last year, we launched a project to improve conditions at the Gambasse School by upgrading existing classrooms, building two new ones, and refurbishing the kitchen. This year, we are continuing to improve the school’s facilities by constructing an audiovisual classroom, providing 550 books, funding scholarships for vulnerable children, and contributing to teachers’ salaries, benefitting a total of 896 children.

Construction of a Nursery School in Soussoutou
With Guné Foundation

The Guné Foundation is committed to supporting comprehensive development processes in Senegal. Its interventions aim to help build a fairer and more compassionate world by facilitating access to basic rights for the most vulnerable people, including food, education, healthcare and nutrition. The population of the village of Soussoutou lives in a savannah area, far from urban centres, surrounded by grazing land, and without a road network to facilitate travel to health or educational facilities. The village is located 40 kilometres from the nearest town. It has around 1,000 inhabitants and five classrooms at the local school, only one of which is made of cement — built in collaboration with the Nuria García Foundation in 2020. The remaining classrooms are constructed from straw and reeds. This is the fifth year we have collaborated with the Guné Foundation, and we have continued to support this community by building another cement classroom to improve the learning conditions for 192 children.
