Haiti has been struck by yet another humanitarian disaster — a 7.2 magnitude earthquake on the Richter scale, with the epicentre located in the south-western region of the country, around 160 kilometres from the capital, Port-au-Prince. The earthquake on 14 August resulted in more than 2,300 deaths, over 12,000 injuries, and 1.5 million people affected, not to mention the large number of missing persons and the collapse of infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, homes and roads. With experience in humanitarian emergency programmes, NPH Haiti, together with the Nuria García Foundation, quickly coordinated a response to the earthquake by providing medical care and relief to the civilian population, and distributing essential goods including water and food, medicine, diagnostic tests, diesel and shelter. Following the emergency response, construction materials were acquired to help rebuild homes for affected families, supporting 600 disadvantaged children.
