Another special moment in the life of the Foundation: a very interesting meeting with the association Gesta-África, while signing the agreement for funding two campaigns of ophthalmological checkup for the children of Senegal. Lydia Rodriguez Massaguer and Lola Abizanda have told us about the challenges of these campaigns but especially about the happy moments.

In Senegal, 1,5 million of children under 15-year-old are blind and 13 million boys and girls between 5 and 15 years suffre from a  reduced sight because of not corrected refraction faults.

The Department of Health of Senegal, thanks to its National Program of Fight against Blindness, tries to relieve this serious situation but the lack of ressources makes that these programs are not quite as effective as they should be.

GESTA-ÁFRICA, by means of a surgical mobile unit (the only  unit that operates in Senegal), collaborates actively with the official program of the Department. Lydia R. Massaguer, Chairwoman and Project coordinator has full confidence from the competent authorities to organize the campaigns of interventions of cataracts and infantile reviews since 2009.

Both ophthalmological campaigns, which Gesta will realize in May and November financed by the Nuria García Foundation for the infantile part, will attend to approximately 1000 children, realizing surgical interventions and sight controls.
