The Colores de Calcuta Foundation is committed to human rights and the development of individuals and communities living in situations of vulnerability, exclusion and poverty, with special attention given to children. Living conditions in the neighbourhood of Pilkhana, Kolkata, are extremely harsh: precarious infrastructure, families living in shanties or unsafe buildings, without electricity, ventilation or water. To make matters worse, the high levels of pollution, lack of hygiene, limited access to clean water, malnutrition, and the physically demanding jobs they carry out have serious consequences on their health. Furthermore, existing public resources are insufficient — there are only two hospitals for 4.8 million inhabitants, and 1 in every 2 children suffers from malnutrition. This situation has worsened since the pandemic began in 2020. The Nuria García Foundation has joined the effort to improve the health of 465 children, by financing the salary of a paediatrician, a nurse, a physiotherapist, as well as the medication and essential food supplies provided by the paediatric unit over a 12-month period.
